Student Employment

Student Employees

Annually OCCC employs numerous students through our Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Student employment is designed to be a learning experience that complements a student’s academic and career goals while providing valuable work experience. Our student employees are a valuable asset in helping to meet the staffing needs of various departments across campus. The STEP program includes two types of temporary, part-time positions: STEP positions and Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) positions. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

STEP Positions

  • Must be a current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours during the Fall/Spring semester OR enrolled in a minimum of three (3) credit hours during the Summer semester.
  • Please note: some STEP positions may have additional minimum eligibility requirements.

Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) Positions

  • Must be a current OCCC student with a Federal Work Study Award.

International Student Employment

Many international students are eligible to work on campus during their academic program, but it is important that they abide by employment regulations set by federal regulations in order to maintain their immigration status. Unauthorized employment is a serious violation of status and can result in a student being asked to leave the country.

On-Campus Employment Eligibility

Students in good academic standing and in valid F-1 or J-1 status are eligible to work on campus up to 20 hours per week. The total number of hours worked for all on-campus jobs cannot exceed these limits, so you should ask if a student is currently employed in another office during the hiring process. If the student is graduating in summer quarter and has been authorized to drop below full-time status, he can still only work a maximum of 20 hours per week since summer is not considered a vacation term in this situation.

Employment Authorization Letter for J-1 Students

Students in J-1 status must request an employment authorization letter from International Student Services before engaging in any on-campus employment. Social Security Number
