Captioning Procedures (Revised 05/02)

Time is of the utmost importance when a student's disability accommodation is captioning services. This is an accommodation for all Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.

Videos that cannot be ordered with captions can be captioned with copyright permission for educational purposes. This will of course make the captioning process even longer.

PROCEDURES FOR CAPTIONING REQUESTS

1. A request for a video to be captioned must be made for each video. Immediate reply to the Disability Support Assistant's (DSA) request for a list of video titles, location of video, and scheduled showings of video instructional material to be used for the semester is extremely important. An Electronic form to request video captioning is now available on the Student Accessibility and Support web page.
2. The instructor will notify the DSA, as soon as possible if there are any additions or deletions from the instructor's list or changed dates of showing.
3. Videos will be captioned in order according to scheduled showing dates providedby instructors. If there is a problem completing the video by the date required, you will be notified.
4. ALL open captioned videos, after completion, (see information for difference in open/closed captioning) will be in the library, labs, or occasionally in Student Accessibility and Support (SAS). When you make the request to AV, if the video is not in the library or lab, please contact the SSS office.
5. Original personal videos will be returned to the owner after captioning is complete, but the captioned copy will be sent to the library. A request will be submitted to the library to purchase the video.
6. When making a request to AV, you should request a captioned version of the video from the library or wherever. The TV/VCR should be set for closed caption. Click menu on the remote, then click on captioning 1 or 2. If 1 doesn't work, then try 2. If the video is open caption (meaning our office captioned it) then the TV/VCR will not need to be set. A yellow dot on the video case means it should be open caption. A pink dot means the video should be closed caption (however, at present this may not always be true, we are working on this).
