Mentoring
Mentoring is a communication-based personal relationship in which one experienced person shares knowledge and advice with a less experienced person. The person sharing the information is the mentor; the receiver of the information is the mentee. The purpose of the mentor/mentee relationship is to enable the mentor to provide support, guidance, and insight into matters as expressed by the mentee. Mentoring is generally for personal and/or professional development and is often founded on commonalities between the mentor and mentee.
The following elements should be in place for the most effective relationship between mentor and mentee:
- Open communication
- Mutual respect
- Trust
- Rapport
- Confidentiality
- Willingness to commit time required
- Active listening
- Honesty
The Students Connecting with Mentors for Success (SCMS) program is designed to partner mentors with students who are seeking assistance in one or more of the following areas:
- Career exploration and guidance
- Academic achievement
- Post-graduation plans
- Networking opportunities with local professionals
- Connection to internships and entry-level positions
- Time management tips
- Personal character development
- Confidence building
- Positive support and encouragement
Mentors have life lessons to share and meaningful experiences to convey.
