For Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) student Grace Kouassi, leadership is about more than titles — it’s about working with others to create meaningful change.
Kouassi, a political science major and international student from Ivory Coast, recently was named OCCC’s 2025 Nigh Scholar. She serves as vice president of OCCC’s Student Government Association and president of the International Student Association.
The George and Donna Nigh Leadership Scholarship Academy, named after former Oklahoma Gov. George Nigh and his wife, Donna, recognizes outstanding students from colleges and universities across the state.
Like many other students receiving this honor, Kouassi had no idea the opportunity existed. The news came as a complete surprise.
“Before being selected, I had never heard of the Nigh Academy, but I soon realized how much of an impact it would have on my leadership journey,” Kouassi said. “I was very surprised and excited to represent my college.”
The Nigh Leadership Academy brought together students from across Oklahoma for workshops, networking opportunities and service projects. Kouassi highlighted the opening speech by George and Donna Nigh as particularly inspiring, setting a positive tone for the experience.
The group also volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, an opportunity that Kouassi said stood out as both rewarding and enjoyable.
Through the academy, Kouassi built valuable connections with like-minded students and professionals whose careers she hopes to emulate.

The experience also provided a new perspective on leadership.
“I learned that a true leader works with others,” she said. “Leadership isn’t about being the smartest. It’s about recognizing your weaknesses and surrounding yourself with people whose strengths complement your own.”
Kouassi will graduate from OCCC in May and plans to transfer to a four-year university to continue studying political science.
Opportunities like the Nigh Leadership Academy are just one of the many ways OCCC supports students in their academic and leadership journeys.
