Earn industry credentials while ensuring your company is ready to adhere to a new health information management system with Oklahoma City Community College’s (OCCC) International Classification of Diseases, 10th Version, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) course.
The four-day course will be offered July 6-9 and July 20-23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Thursday at the Professional Development Institute, 7124 S. I-35 Service Road. Cost to attend the course is $895.00. This does not include textbooks. However, textbooks can be purchased individually as well as by each medical organization as one set of four books for the price of $319.72.
This course is beneficial to coding and billing staff, office managers, physicians, providers of services, reimbursement staff, revenue cycle staff, claim processors and data set coordinators. Covering all 21 chapters of ICD-10-CM, the course will include coding and continuing education units for those already certified with AHIMA.
ICD-10-CM is designed for classifying and reporting diseases in all healthcare settings. The development of this classification system involved extensive input from the healthcare industry, including the physician community and much of the additional clinical detail was recommended by physician groups. ICD-10-CM is used internationally and all U.S. HIPAA-covered entities must convert to this system for reporting diagnoses by Oct. 1, 2015.
“Individuals and companies should not hesitate to update to ICD-10. You have to have the training by Oct. 1 to submit claims. The transition was supposed to happen a few years prior, but was delayed and now a lot of businesses are scrambling. Get it done now, so you can do it right and be prepared for this big change,” said American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) ICD-10 Ambassador and Trainer Micki Fields.
This classification system includes improved clinical detail, the capture of medical technology, up-to-date terminology and a more flexible structure. Thus ICD-10-CM is valuable for its higher quality information for measuring healthcare service quality, safety and efficiency; improved ability to manage chronic diseases by better capturing patient populations; improved information sharing; more accurate reflection of patients’ clinical complexity and severity of illness; improved efficiencies and lower costs; and much more.
Fields, RHIT and CCS, will teach ICD-10-CM at OCCC. Fields has 15 years of experience managing medical records, coding and reimbursement. She currently owns and manages a medical coding and billing service.
“I try to keep the class hands-on with power points, group discussions, coding scenarios and lots of feedback that explains the correct answers to any question students may have,” Fields said of her teaching style then added, “I really enjoy teaching.
