OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 1, 2024) — Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) presents the Oklahoma premiere of Grand Kyiv Ballet’s “Snow Queen” Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
A Christmas ballet, “The Snow Queen” is based on the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and set to the music of Edvard Grieg, Jules Massenet, Mozart and Vivaldi.
The story opens with Kai and Gerda, sitting in their garden among roses, when a shard of a witch’s mirror gets into Kai’s eye and turns his heart hard and cold. One winter day, a whirlwind of snow rises around Kai and he disappears, taken by the Snow Queen to her world of ice and snow. Gerda goes in search of Kai, facing many challenges and meeting robbers, forest fairies, funny snowman and fabulous trolls in her love-inspired quest to free Kai from the spell of the Snow Queen.
The Grand Kyiv Ballet is a company of touring Ukrainian ballet dancers founded by the premiere of the ballet of the National Opera of Ukraine, Oleksandr Stoianov, who serves as founder, artistic director and principal. The Grand Kyiv Ballet began its activity in 2014 and has toured the world. The Oct. 30 show at OCCC will be the first time the company has performed in Oklahoma.
“I was fortunate enough to attend a ballet in Kyiv in 2021 and was bowled over by the skill of the dancers. What an honor to host the Grand Kyiv Ballet company in their Oklahoma premiere of ‘Snow Queen,'” said Mark Levine, director of the OCCC Visual and Performing Arts Center. “Be sure to come out and see the story that inspired ‘Frozen’ in a miraculous ballet — it’s a must!”
