OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Hailey Jennings, a driven and ambitious political science/pre-law major at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC), recently achieved a significant milestone in her academic journey: She was awarded the 2024 George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship, earning the title of Nigh Scholar.
Established in 1999, the scholarship program enables colleges and universities across Oklahoma to nominate one recipient annually. Nominees undergo a rigorous selection process, where their leadership qualities, commitment to public service and academic achievements are carefully evaluated. Students selected for the award received a one-time $1,000 Leadership Scholarship.
At the heart of the scholarship lies the George and Donna Nigh Leadership Academy, an immersive, five-day program aimed at nurturing leadership skills through dynamic workshops and networking opportunities. During the Academy, nominees engaged with distinguished leaders, such as former Gov. George Nigh and Chancellor Allison D. Garrett of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, gaining valuable insights and building meaningful connections.

Reflecting on her experience at the academy, Hailey shared, “I met some truly remarkable individuals at the Academy. I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, both personally and professionally.”
OCCC leadership and mentorship
Hailey’s journey to becoming a Nigh Scholar was enriched with opportunities to refine her strengths, including her participation in OCCC’s President’s Leadership Class — a program dedicated to nurturing self-aware, ethical and principle-centered leaders. Each week, students like Hailey learned from various leaders and business owners.
“It’s really important to learn from successful leaders because it helps you to adapt your own leadership style,” said Hailey.
Hailey also benefited immensely from OCCC mentors: Loni Calloway, coordinator of student life; Jesus Raygosa, director of student life, leadership, and development; and Chris Snoddy, associate vice president for student affairs. With their guidance, Hailey continued to thrive on campus and became deeply involved. Currently, she serves as the treasurer of the OCCC Student Government Association (SGA), overseeing club budgets and ensuring that students have access to resources for club activities.
Impact of past Nigh Scholars
Past recipients of the Nigh Scholarship have made significant contributions across various fields, demonstrating the program’s lasting influence. Hailey’s selection as a Nigh Scholar paves the way for her promising future career. As she prepares for graduation in May, she eagerly anticipates the next chapter. Driven by her passion for public service and leadership, she looks forward to continuing her studies in political science and law at a four-year institution. Hailey intends to use her education and leadership skills to advocate for positive change in her community and beyond.
