Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) announced a new partnership with Gulf States Toyota to offer a Toyota Education College Support (TECS) program. Students enrolled in the Automotive Internship Program (ATIP) will work on Toyota components and complete specific training modules above and beyond the standard degree program. The program provides a direct solution to the shortage of qualified technicians in the automotive industry.
“Cars are getting more complicated, there’s no doubt about it,†said Brad Walker, Director of the OCCC’s Automotive Department. “Today’s – and certainly tomorrow’s – automotive technicians are so much more than just ‘mechanics,’ they are computer technicians as well.â€
Graduates of the TECS program will become Toyota Maintenance-Level Certified Technicians, giving them a specific line into employment at Toyota dealerships and specialty shops. Due to COVID-19, much of the coursework related to TECS will take place via eLearning Modules.
“There is almost never a guarantee of gainful employment upon completion of a degree, especially in the current economy, but a TECS certification provides immediate credibility to Toyota shops looking for capable technicians,†said Walker.
Students who wish to enroll in the program, or who want more information, should contact Director Walker at bwalker@occc.edu or 405.682.1611, extension 7128.
