Community Outreach & Education English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language
|
Program Information
The curriculum follows five characters through the intriguing issues they encounter with co-workers, customers, family and friends in a variety of realistic workplace and personal settings and situations. Project Success takes place in a workplace environment representing a sector of the economy in which the learner is most likely to participate in his actual work life. While the textbooks are contextualized in specific workplaces, the skills are transferable to other types of workplaces and to life in the community and academic life.
Starting FY 19, the ESL program will redefine its course focus from English in general areas of life to English for specific purposes. While general elements of learning English as a second language will lay foundation for the curriculum, an integration of content based on the types of WIOA measurable gains will give the curriculum its shape. The new student outcomes as part of this integration are:
- Career and Academic Goal setting
- Job Search skills
- Soft skills
- Digital Literacy
Our new direction will use a new coursebook, Project Success by Pearson, that will move students through ESL levels organically as they learn about six important sectors in today's economy: food service, hospitality, healthcare, higher education, business, and retail. Project Success is impeccably correlated to WIOA and CCRS while beautifully aligning with CASAS. Project Success also does a fantastic job incorporating ESL with college and job readiness. In addition to the basic language skills, each unit has specific lessons on Job-seeking Skills and on Career Pathways. (see attached scope and sequence).
Classes are conveniently located throughout the Oklahoma City Metro. We do our best to place you in a class as close to your home or work as possible.
To make our classes as accessible to as many as possible, we offer them on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule, both of which are available in the morning (9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.) or evening (6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.).
Students take a brief assessment when enrolling to help us target their greatest areas of need. This allows us to place students in an appropriate class according to their literacy level. |
