THE BALD SOPRANO follows two couples over the course of an evening at the Smiths’. During the evening the local Fire Chief stops by and joins the two couples taking turns in telling nonsensical stories for the evening’s entertainment.
OCCC’s production of THE BALD SOPRANO playfully explores the ideas highlighted in Theatre of the Absurd. Ionesco’s play is a critical examination of social conventions, expectations, and niceties with a comedic take on the nature of small talk and propriety in our Western culture. Ionesco seems to suggest that the ways in which people engage in small and/or surface level conversation are meaningless and ridiculous.
