Timeless classic “Frankenstein†set to thrill audience
Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) and Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre (CityRep) have again partnered with National Theatre Live (NTL) to present theatre productions to audiences in the college’s Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) Theater. NTL is the National Theatre’s groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage to cinemas across the United Kingdom and around the world.
National Theatre Live launched in June 2009, and since then, over 3.5 million people in more than 1,100 venues around the world have experienced the broadcast productions. Though each live broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view of each production. OCCC was one of the select U.S. venues granted the rights to show these pre-recorded High Definition productions.
Due to an unprecedented audience demand for its return, OCCC launched the NTL season with the comedic “One Man, Two Guvnors.” Next up is the thrilling broadcast of “Frankenstein” Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at 6 p.m. Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle, the performance presents celebrated actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Lee Miller alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
The production was a sellout hit at the National Theatre in 2011, and the broadcast has since become an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world.
All NTL events at OCCC are encore presentations pre-recorded in high-definition. The 2016-2017 NTL lineup includes:
