Turn on any news program and more than likely you’ll hear some story involving the use of a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS), or as they are more commonly known as—drones. Despite what you may think about the use of drones, they are here to stay and Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) is offering an innovative program to help operators learn how to properly use them and stay in compliance with the ever-changing rules that drone operators are required to follow.
PDI is offering a free two-hour new sUAS operator orientation Nov. 9, before launching the full 18-hour course Dec. 7.
The free orientation will allow new operators or individuals interested in attending the academy a chance to experience operating the simulator and practice flying a quadcopter. While the orientation is free, seating is limited. To register, contact Patrick Clanin 405-682-7854 or via email at patrick.a.clanin@occc.edu.
The 18-hour sUAS course is designed for anyone, 16 years and older that wants to fly for fun or as a new career after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) opens the skies to commercial use. Each student will receive a small quadcopter with camera, flight simulator software and Spektrum dx5e radio transmitter to be used with the simulator. The equipment will allow students to practice in between classes and after the course is completed. Graduates also receive a certificate of completion.
Students will learn to fly using both computer flight simulations and live quadcopters. Students will also be taught the different types of flight systems and, most importantly, acquire insight into safe and legal flying practices. Individuals will learn about emerging job opportunities, and companies are exposed to the application and use of this transformative technology in their businesses.
Over six three-hour sessions, a complete overview will help you gain a thorough understanding of sUAS as the course will cover the following: the different types of sUAS including both multirotor and fixed-wing and the different types of flight systems.
Other topics covered are flight vehicles, radio controllers, components and characteristics, autonomous flight, routine maintenance, uses and applications, safety, FAA guidelines, privacy concerns and insurance.
The course starts Dec. 7 and runs through Dec. 18. The cost is $1499.00 and does include a quadcopter with camera, flight simulator software and Spektrum dx5e radio transmitter to be used with the simulator. For questions about the course or to enroll, contact Patrick Clanin by phone 405-682-7854 or via email at patrick.a.clanin@occc.edu. Students can also register online by visiting: www.campusce.net/occc/course/course.aspx?C=1373&pc=21&mc=&sc
The sUAS course will be held at the Professional Development Institute, 7124 I-35 Service Road. For more information about PDI, visit /pdi or call 405-682-7562.
