The Writing Center loves to serve our faculty. Below is a list of services the lab provides and some of the spaces instructors can reserve for their classroom needs. To reserve our services or spaces, click the link at the bottom of the page.
Writing Center Orientation
A member of the lab team will explain how to use the lab, how the lab benefits students, and some of our additional services. Lab tours generally last about 15 to 20 minutes, and they can be given in the lab or in an instructor's classroom.
Do your students need a refresher on MLA formatting or how to correctly quote or paraphrase? We offer workshops covering 19 different writing related topics. And if we don't have one that fits your needs, we can work with you to craft one. Also, many of our workshops include collaborative activities, so students will be able to apply what they have learned with the guidance of our trained staff. Our workshops usually last around 30 minutes to an hour, and they can be presented in your classroom or in a reserved lab space. Some instructors even choose to reserve a workshop for a handful of interested students outside of their class time, so they don't have to sacrifice their own lesson plans. A full list of pre-made topics is available at: http://www.occc.edu/writingcenter/available-workshops.html
Technology / Room Reservation
Instructors needing special event space or additional computer resources can reserve the lab for their students. The lab has 35 computer workstations or collaborative or individual activities. In addition to the technology resources, instructors can reserve one of the lab's spaces for workshops or other activities.
Writing Center Tutoring Floor
The Tutoring Floor is located inside the Writing Center in 1N7. The tutoring floor is where the magic happens. Our trained tutoring staff work with students in one-on-one tutoring sessions to address their writing concerns. Instructors can access the tutoring floor to give their students a space to work independently on writing projects or to coordinate tutoring sessions for their whole class.
Writing Center Computer Area
The Computer Area is located inside the Writing Center in 1N7. If you are needing access to computers for your class activity, the Writing Center allows instructors to reserve some or all of our 35 computer workstations. This space is great for instructors who do not have computer-assisted classrooms but need access to some computers for an activity or who want students to work independently on an assignment while tutors are present.
Writing Center Tech Room
The Tech Room is the lab's newest space, located inside the Writing Center in 1M8(D). The Tech Room houses a media-ported collaborative conference table, a dry erase board, and seating that accommodates 14 people. This space is ideal for small workshops and collaborative activities.
