Why did you choose OCCC?

I’m a single mother and wanted to do more for my family. I got connected with the college through the Career Transitions Program. I love it here.

What is your favorite class?

I have learned so much in my Introduction to Computers class. I’m learning to use the programs that I’m going to be using later in college and in my career.

What do you like best about campus life?

The Career Transitions program has been amazing. The program is all about career readiness. They help us prepare our resume, they require us to participate in several mock interviews, and they put us in contact with representatives in the professional workforce. A lot of students drop out of college because it’s too scary; it’s too much. Here they prepare us.

How has OCCC surprised your or differed from your expectations?

At first I was nervous to come back to school. It was scary and overwhelming starting all over at the age of 32. But soon, I found my spot here. I’m glad I chose OCCC.

Have you declared a major?

I’m really just getting started, but I’ve chosen to major in cyber security.

How do you like your instructors?

The instructors are genuinely here for us; they really care. They do so much to help us succeed and to show us what’s around the corner – in future classes and in the job market.

If we need extra help, the labs on campus are great too. There are so many opportunities to succeed at OCCC.

What are your plans following graduation?

After getting my associate degree, I want to transfer to a four year school. I want to get my bachelor’s and my master’s.

Would you recommend OCCC to friends and if so, why?

Yes. I think that community college is the best way to start your college education. Small is good, it’s less overwhelming, and then you can ease your way into the rest.

What advice would you offer to friends who are planning to enroll at OCC?

I would tell students enrolling at OCCC to make sure they connect with admissions and faculty advisors. I would also tell them to take full advantage of all the extra support offered through the labs, advisors and tutors.

I’ve found a little family here through my instructors and friends I’ve met in my classes. OCCC is affordable, reliable and convenient, especially if you have a family at home.

What are some of your hobbies outside the classroom?

I have a 10-month-old son – he is my hobby. I also love to dance. In fact, a student friend from the World Language and Culture Center at OCCC recently taught me how to do the Bachata. It’s a style of dance they do in the Dominican Republic – so fun.
