What Do I Need for My Online Class?

Taking an online class is a commitment of time, energy, and resources.  Successful students have found they need several things in order for them to be successful.

Online classes sound like a nice option for students who do not have time to come to campus to take a class.  The not so well known fact is that they require the same amount of time as an on campus class.  It is a good idea to create a schedule that includes times set aside for you to work on your online class each week, 2-3 times per week.  Most classes are three credit hour and a three hour class will require 5-7 hours per week.  Dedicate some time when you can have some quiet time to read, write, and complete your studies.

Successful students say that time management is the key to being a good online student.  The VLC has some tips for good time management.  Good online students say that another key to time management is being organized.  College brings a lot of new aspects of life to try to organize but it's possible.  A little bit of time in the beginning can help you get and stay organized.

Taking an online class means that all of your course assignments and exams are going to be completed via the internet.  Therefore, it's important to have a reliable computer and internet connection.  While many assignments can be completed via your phone, it is not a recommended platform to plan to complete your class.  The internet can be both a wonderful storehouse of knowledge and overwhelming.  Using the internet for college work is different than looking for the latest YouTube video.  There are some strategies to use the internet effectively as you learn

It's also important to know how to use the technology once you have it.  You will likely need to have Microsoft Office or similar suite of software to complete your work.  OCCC provides Microsoft Office 365 to students for FREE.  You can find information about how to access it and download it onto your computer here

Online courses require books.  There is a long-standing myth that says that online students don't need books.  That is not true.  Instructors expect you to have the required books and materials for your class on the first day of class.  You can order your textbooks from OCCC Bookstore.  They can ship them to you or you can pick them up on campus.

Student ID Card

Don't forget to get your official OCCC student ID card!  You'll need your ID number if you contact Moodle Tech Support for assistance with your course as well as if you call the Help Desk to reset your password. Also, you may get discounts at many businesses if you show your college student ID.
