Institutional Review Board

An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of people involved in research. IRB's review plans for research involving human subjects to ensure the research complies with federal laws and regulations. Institutions that accept research funding from the federal government must have an IRB to review all research involving human subjects, even if a given research project does not involve federal funding. The requirement for this review came about as a direct result of abuses in federally funded medical research in the 20th century. OCCC has established a process conforming to federal guidelines to review proposed scholarly research utilizing human subjects.  The links below outline the steps for approving such research on the OCCC campus.
