Abra (Abbie) Figueroa is a proud native Oklahoman who holds a Master of Arts degree in Bilingual/ESL Studies from the University of Massachusetts, and a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard University. She has traveled extensively and has lived abroad in Ireland, Germany, Morocco, and Japan. Before her tenure at OCCC, she served with the United States Peace Corps as a Professor of English at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University in Tetouan, Morocco. Later she served as a Professor of English at OSU-K, Oklahoma State University’s then branch campus in Kameoka, Japan. In 1995, Professor Figueroa joined the faculty of Oklahoma City Community College as Director of English as a Second Language. For two decades she taught ESL and mentored international students at OCCC. These days she teaches Spanish and serves as a Professor of Modern Languages and Coordinator for Modern Languages. Professor Figueroa believes from the heart that all students, regardless of background, benefit from the horizon-expanding experience of learning a second language. She is committed to helping students achieve their language-learning goals whatever those may be.
