After a brief introduction to the aesthetic and functional dimensions of non-western music, students will learn to listen critically to indigenous music of several geographical areas and to analyze and make oral and written statements about its components. They will also examine the unique cultural, political, and religious factors which give rise to certain types of music. Students are encouraged to attend live performances whenever possible, and guest musicians are scheduled to visit the class. No previous musical training is assumed.
