Teaching Your Classes with Zoom
Zoom can be a powerful tool for delivering content to your students outside of a traditional class meeting. There are some important things to keep in mind as you use this technology to share information with your students.
1. Always use your OCCC Zoom account
Your OCCC Zoom account can be accessed at occc.zoom.us. You will log into your account using your normal OCCC log in credentials. This is a safer way to interact with your students. It is behind our system for your protection. Regular Zoom accounts lack this extra layer of protection for you and your students.
2. Request a Zoom Pro account
Why Zoom Pro account?
- Longer meeting time (regular account has a 40 minute maximum, Pro accounts allow meetings up to 24 hours)
- Allows for captioning of your recording if it's saved in the cloud.
3. Be aware of your location and setting
- Lighting is very important - Have light in front of you to light your face. Evenly light both sides of your face.
- Don't forget the presenter - Attendees and participants in a Zoom session will most likely be looking at the presenter during the session. Dress appropriately for the meeting.
- Place the camera at eye level. Look at the camera as often as is possible. Looking in the camera is equivalent of looking your attendees in the eye.
- Check your background - The items appearing in the background of your video can impact the focus of your audience. Be mindful to have an interesting background but not cluttered.
4. Check your internet connection
Check your internet connection before beginning a meeting. Shut down all applications that require internet. Have a good microphone and webcam.
5. Test your technology
Create a meeting and ask a colleague to join the meeting to ensure it's working as desired.
6. If you record your class, let your students know.
It's just a common courtesy. People may make different choices if they are aware conversations are being recorded.
