The following suggestions will help you do well in Biology and
probably other courses as well.
1. Study every day. Spend at least 15 minutes each day reviewing
the information presented on the CD-ROM and reading in your text.
2. Do not cram. Studying many hours the night before a test is
not an effective way to learn. People typically make stupid mistakes
on tests when they cram. If you study every day, there will be no
need to cram.
3. Take notes when you study the modules on the CD-ROM. Recopy
or edit those notes the same day. If there is something in your
notes that you do not understand, figure it out that day. Do not
wait until the day before the test to try to understand it.
4. Print the objectives from the objectives icon. Write an answer
for each objective. You can use this on the test. Every test question
comes from the objectives.
5. Draw diagrams to help you remember concepts. If you can visualize
a concept it usually much easier to remember and understand.
6. Use the bulletin board to ask other students about something
you may not completely understand. Most are more than willing to
help.
7. The Science Center usually has a Biology Tutor. The tutor is
a current student who has done well in Biology. The tutor service
is free!
8. Be realistic about the time you will need to devote to this
class. For an average college class you should spend 3 times the
credit hours per week. That is 9 hours for a 3 hour class or 12
hours for a 4 hour class. Online courses typically require more
student time than campus classes. Also, Biology often requires more
time for many students. You should have 10 to 15 hours a week in
your schedule to work on this class.
