Painting happiness one house at a time
OCCC students spent
March 25 painting a house donated by Habitat for Humanity of Central Oklahoma and Cleveland County.
Jon Horinek, Community Engagement coordinator, and 21 student volunteers painted the house as part of OCCC's Service Saturdays, a community service project.
First-time volunteer and OCCC freshman Ron Wilson said community service is good.
“It is a need in the community,” Wilson said.
He said he was proud to be part of the assortment of volunteers.
“It's a neat group with a lot of unity,” he said. “People are here from chur-ches and the military, all for one cause.”
Student Albert Stichka said he was excited to be painting the house.
The OCCC volunteers were provided a box lunch funded by Student Life.
Steven Crawford, Habitat for Humanity supervisor, said he was happy to announce the organization's involvement with the building of 100 houses in June.
“Habitat for Humanity of Central Oklahoma will be building 10 of those 100 houses,” Crawford said.
Habitat for Humanity builds about 40 houses a year, Crawford said. Each home costs about $65,000 and is sold interest free.
The next Service Saturday will be held April 8.
