There’s a little hippie in all of us; the Quirky to Modern Art Quilts-Hippie at Heart exhibit, a selection of quilts from the collection of Judy Steiger Howard, will be displayed at Oklahoma City Community College’s (OCCC) Inasmuch Foundation Gallery Thursday, Aug. 31 through Friday, Oct. 20, 2017.
The exhibit explores the “quirky†and modern art quilt movements from the 1960s to present day and the influence of the hippie ideology on quilting. Quilters from the 1800s through today have aimed at changing the world by leaving a legacy of creative kindness, love and story that only quilts can provide. Artists desire to express beauty, love, thoughts, religious and political beliefs, pain and victories through quilting-to paint their stories and capture their memories and dreams with needle and thread.
Some quilt hippies, like the hippies of the sixties, desire to return to a simpler minimalistic lifestyle, back to nature, recycling and making do with materials on hand. These quilt hippies are reassessing their purpose and the meaning of life in the greater scheme – a process of enlightenment. Quilt hippies express their journeys in various ways by creating outside the box, using hand dyed or painted and bizarre fabrics, digital photos of nature and loved ones, and outrageous colors and improvisational patterns.
