Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters

Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) hosts Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters, one of the most renowned tribute bands, in its Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) Theater Saturday, Jan. 21, 2016, at 8 p.m.

Considered one of the best vocalists of all time, Karen Carpenter, with her brother Richard, captured the attention of a generation with their unabashedly catchy pop music. Their beautiful, memorable love songs topped the Billboard charts in the 1970s with more than a dozen No. 1 hits including "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Top of the World" and more. Now Lisa Rock and her six-piece band bring these songs to Oklahoma City with spot-on renditions interspersed with anecdotes about the Carpenters and the backstory on how some of the songs originated.

Formed in 2010, the group is dedicated to creating a Carpenters experience like no other. Rock, a singer and playwright inspired by the voice and life of Karen Carpenter, has compiled a moving tribute to the music of the Carpenters. Recreating the authentic sound of the group, the band plays all songs in their original key thanks to Rock's four-octave range.

OCCC's VPAC Theater continues to provide spectacular performances all season long in its 2016-2017 Performing Arts Series. The series' first performance of 2017, the Koresh Dance Company, will be Tuesday, Jan. 24. "Defending the Caveman," the longest running solo play in Broadway history, will have three performances Feb. 10 & 11, 2017.
