Students sell lemonade for a great cause at OCCC

Summer kids' camps at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC), including College for Kids, are in full swing. Back by popular demand, students will participate in Alex's Lemonade Stand again this year to raise money for the Foundation for Childhood Cancer.

The lemonade stand is part of the "Giving Back" class which teaches students all aspects of fundraising, planning and promoting an event. On July 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., students will run Alex's Lemonade Stand to raise money to fight childhood cancer.

There will be a lemonade stand at the main campus outside between entrance SEM1 and SEM2 and also at the OCCC Family and Community Education (FACE) Center, 6500 S. Land Avenue in Oklahoma City. The entire community is encouraged to stop by, purchase a cool drink and help support the fight against cancer in children.

"It's always a popular class, and the cause is so great, we couldn't help but organize Alex's Lemonade Stand again this summer," said Paul Burkhardt, OCCC Community Outreach Coordinator. "For these students, we organize a service project and teach a class about the importance of giving back."

About Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is a pediatric cancer charity founded by Alexandra "Alex" Scott who in 2000, at age four, wished to set up a lemonade stand to help raise money for childhood cancer research.

In 1997, just before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that frequently attacks children in the nervous system or adrenal glands. For eight years, Alex overcame obstacle after cancer obstacle and raised $1 million before she passed away August 1, 2004.

Every year more than 263,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with some form of childhood cancer. Progress in treating childhood cancer has been dramatic in the last three decades largely due to increased funding for research.

Alex's idea inspired a national fund-raising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised more than $30 million towards fulfilling Alex's dream of finding a cure, funding over 80 research projects nationally.
