Oklahoma! to Screen at Arts Festival Oklahoma
Free matinees will show all weekend long in the Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater.
Free matinees of the newly remastered film Oklahoma! will screen Aug. 30 — Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. at Oklahoma City Community College's new Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater. A signature piece of the college's 36th annual Arts Festival Oklahoma, "Celebrate Oklahoma! More Than Just a Movie" marks the state premiere of the film in its remastered version.
Restored by 20th Century Fox, the remastered, high definition film first screened in April 2014 at the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival in Hollywood. Local organizers are in the early stages of planning a 2015 tour of additional screenings across the state.
"The free matinees are an opportunity for a new generation of Oklahomans to experience a film that is important to and loved by our state," former Oklahoma Governor George Nigh said. "The screenings are also a chance for the rest of us to see Oklahoma! looking and sounding better than ever. Go see it; you'll be proud to be an Oklahoman."
As a state representative, Nigh filed legislation to change Oklahoma's official state song to the musical's title song, "Oklahoma." Nigh and the film's leading actress, Shirley Jones, will be honored guests at an Aug. 28 red carpet event to kick off the weekend of free matinees.
The screenings present a unique opportunity to see the film in a theater, as it was originally released. The event will feature an exhibit about the musical's history in the adjoining Sarkeys Foundation Atrium. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Oklahoma History Center and the OCCC department of Cultural Programs.
"We are delighted to host the state premiere of a film so ingrained in the history and heritage of our state," OCCC President Dr. Paul Sechrist said. "The new Visual and Performing Arts Center on campus provides the perfect venue to show the film and is a wonderful complement to Arts Festival Oklahoma which is an Oklahoma City tradition attracting artists from all over the nation."
