OCCC to Observe Relationship Violence Awareness Week

    (Published: 10-12-12)

Silent Witnesses at OCCC

Studies show sad statistics regarding relationships and violence. Did you know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime? Student Support Services and the Office of Student Life on the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) campus will host activities associated with Relationship Violence Awareness Week, Oct. 22-24.

Research has also shown that an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year; 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women; historically, females are most often victimized by someone they know; females, ages 20-24 years old are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence; and most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.

October is designated as Domestic Violence Prevention Month to draw awareness to the facts and the signs of domestic abuse. Throughout the week at OCCC, information and activities have been planned to help to put preventative measures in place regarding relationship violence.  Activities include:
