OCCC and TSA Honor Associate Program Graduates

Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently honored the first graduates of the TSA Associate Program through the Leadership Training and Career Programs Partnership with OCCC.  Ten students were honored for their accomplishments during a special achievement ceremony on Sept. 5 at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.

About the TSA Associates Program

In 2008, TSA launched a piloted program to determine the best approach to educating Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) with credit courseswhile causing minimal interruption to their work schedule. Since then, nationwideairports have been partnered with institutions of higher education to provide TSOs with the opportunity to work toward a TSA Certificate of Achievement in Homeland Security and/or an Associate Degree in Homeland Security or, other related field.

The Professional Development Institute (PDI) at OCCC began its partnership with TSA in the spring of 2011 at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City with a total of 16 students. As of spring 2012, 80 airports and 64 partner colleges were participating in the program, and currently, over 2,800 students are enrolled in the program nationally.

The 2012 TSA Associate Program student honorees from Oklahoma City are: Denise Dougherty, Tim Hudson, Tamikia Jefferson, Dzung Le, Raan Lindsay, Patricia Mayberry, Kelly Rodgers, Crystal Toner, Linda Voelker-Dawson, and Trevell Woodberry.

The keynote speaker at the TSA Achievement Ceremony was Brett Gunter, deputy assistant administrator of the Office of Training and Workforce Engagement. Others in attendance were Kevin Donovan, director for Oklahoma City Federal Security; Mitch Brown, regional director for the Office of Security Operations; and Steve Bloomberg, vice president for Community Development at Oklahoma City Community College.

The PDI at OCCC offers a “higher degree of learning and education” by developing unique and innovative solutions for the life-long learning needs of employees in business, governmental, and not-for-profit organizations. Services include credit and non-credit classes on campus, on site,or online. ThePDI strives to meet individual workplace challenges and deliver customer services to fit those requirements.
