WebCT Student Guide

WebCT E-mail

Each course in WebCT has its own internal E-mail system, which you will use to communicate with your instructor and other students in the course. To access E-mail in your course, click on the E-mail icon. The E-mail screen will look like the one below and will have the following options:

  • Compose Mail Message - write a new e-mail message
  • Manage Folders - create, delete and rename email folders
  • Manage Messages - delete or move messages to new folder
  • Search - Search for an e-mail message

Read an E-mail Message

  1. Click on "Inbox".



  2. Click "All" to view all messages in the Inbox. Click "Unread" to view only the unread messages. Click on the Subject of the E-mail message to open it.



  3. Read your E-Mail message and select one of the following options:
    • Reply - reply back to the email message
    • Forward - forward the email to another person
    • Quote - include the received message with your reply message
    • Download - download the message to your computer
    • Close - save and close message

 

Reply to an E-mail Message

  • Open an E-mail message.

  1. Click "Reply".



  2. Type the message in the Message box.

  3. Click "Send"


Compose E-mail Message

1. Click on "Compose message".



2. Click on "Browse" to see the addressbook for the course.



3. Click on the name of the person who will receive the message. Click "Select".



4. Check that their name appears in the Send to box.

5. Type the subject of your E-mail message in the Subject box.

6. Click "Send".

Forward an E-mail Message

  1. Open an E-mail message.

  2. Click "Forward".



  3. Browse for the name of the person who will receive the email.

  4. Click "Send"

Discussion Board

The Discussion board works the same way as WebCT E-Mail, except your posted messages can be read by anyone in the course. Your instructor may use the Discussion Board as part of your course activities.

Read Discussion Board Message

The individual Discussion Board messages are listed under Topics. To view the messages in a Topic, click on the Topic name. To view all messages, click on the "All" topic. On this screen you will also be able to see how many Unread message are on the Discussion Board.

Click on the name of the message under the Subject heading to read the message.


Compose a Discussion Board Message

1. Click "Reply" to respond to a Discussion Board Message.

2. Type in your message and click "Post". Your message will now be posted on the Discussion Board.

3. Click "Update Listing" after reading or composing a Discussion Board message to update the list.

4. Your message is now posted and you will have the updated screen view below.

Quizzes

Taking a Quiz Online

To access the online quizzes in your course:

1. Click on the "Practice Quiz" link in the tutorial.

2. Click on the name of the Quiz.

3. Read the instructions on how to take a quiz online and then click "Begin Quiz". The timer for the quiz starts once you click "Begin Quiz". The questions in a quiz may be in multiple choice, true/false, short answer, matching or essay form.

4. Click "Save answer" after you have answered a question and are sure it is your final answer. On the right side of the quiz screen you can see the Time Remaining for the quiz and the Question Status. If a question has not been answered a yellow dot will be below the question number. A blue check mark below the question number indicates the question has been answered. A red exclaimation point below the quiz number indicates the answer has not been saved.

5. Click "Finish" once you have saved all the question answers.

6. Click "OK" when asked "Do you want to proceed?"

7. Click "OK" when asked to "Submit Quiz for Grading?"

8. The following window will appear if the quiz has been successfully submitted:

Assignment Dropbox

Assignment Dropbox

You will find a list of assignments from your instructor in the Assignment Dropbox. There are three steps involved in using the Assignment Dropbox.

  1. Download the assignment to your computer.
  2. Work on the assignment and save it in Rich Text Format (rtf)
  3. Upload the assignment to the Assignment page in your WebCT course.

Upload Assignment

  1. Click on the Assignment icon.

  2. Click on the title of the assignment. You can select viewing options from the "display" dropdown menu. Read the instructions for the assignment.



  3. Click "Upload File" in the Submit Assignment area.



  4. Click "Browse" to search for your file and then click on the file once you locate it.



  5. Click "Open". The file pathway will now appear in the Filename box.




  6. Click "Upload". The file will appear in the Submit Assignment area.



  7. Click the box next to the file name click "Submit assignment". A window will appear on your screen with the following message: "Confirm: Assignment will be sumbitted. Proceed?" Click "ok".



  8. The following message will appear on the next screen "Success: Your assignment has been successfully submitted."

Download Assignment

  1. Click on the Assignment icon.

  2. Click on the title of the assignment. You can select viewing options from the "display" dropdown menu. Read the instructions for the assignment.



  3. Click on the assignment file name under the column heading "File".



  4. Click on the button next to the file name, and click "Download".



  5. Save the file to your computer.



  6. Select the location on your computer to download the file in the Save in: drop down menu of the Save As window and click "Save".



  7. Open the file on your computer, complete the assignment and save it as Rich Text Format (rtf).
