QuickBooks for Law Firms

Introduction:

QuickBooks is used by thousands of law firms across the country; the program is quite capable of handling most law firm accounting needs, as long as it is set-up properly, and transactions are consistently entered correctly. This Seminar provides an efficient way to use QuickBooks to handle most financial recordkeeping tasks for law firms, including Client Trust accounting requirements.

By attending this seminar, QuickBooks users will learn:

  • Special financial recordkeeping and account consideration for Law Firms
  • How to set up QuickBooks for routine and Client Trust related transactions
  • Time tracking and billable-rates using QuickBooks
  • How to handle Client Trust fund transactions (retainers, proceeds, expenditures and disbursements)
  • Law Firm Specialized Reporting Requirements

Taught using a blend of instructional lecture and demonstrations, this seminar will cover:

  • Unique Chart of Accounts for Law Firms
  • Using QuickBooks Customers & Jobs to track Clients and Cases (client matters)
  • Setting-up Items in QuickBooks to Track Legal Services
    • Items for Client Income, Retainers and Trust funds received
    • IItems for Law Firm Expenses
    • IItems for Client Costs
    • IItems for Attorney's fees paid from Trust funds
  • Time Track for Each Law Firm Member (including Billable Rates)
  • Client Trust Transactions
    • Receiving Retainers and Proceeds
    • Paying Client Expenses
    • Paying Attorney's fees from the Trust Account
    • Disbursements for Client and Attorney portions of Proceeds
  • Special Reports for Law Firms
    • Client Trust Funds - Trust fund balances by Client
  • Q&A (additional time will be available following the seminar)

Who Should Attend?

This seminar is designed for QuickBooks users, including accounting professionals, who have responsibility for financial recordkeeping for Law Firms

Prerequisite: Basic working knowledge of QuickBooks functionality and terminology.

About the Instructor:

William "Bill" Murphy is a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor who has been helping small business owners in Oklahoma get the most from their QuickBooks software since 1989. Bill's consulting firm, RRR, Ltd. specializes in helping clients with installation, set-up, use, training and problem resolution for QuickBooks and related Intuit Software. Bill is also a Certified ProAdvisor in QuickBooks Point-of-Sale and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions. He has over 30 years of teaching and instructional experience, and holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Central Oklahoma.
