Paralegal Certificate Course©

Oklahoma City Community College features online the same Paralegal Certificate Course© that has been offered for over 27 years at colleges and universities throughout the nation. Online participants interact with other students through an online discussion board and assignments and exams are emailed to the attorney/instructor for grading.

This Paralegal Certificate Course© will teach you how to work as a full-time or part-time paralegal or how to open your own freelance business. This intensive, nationally acclaimed curriculum is designed for both beginning as well as advanced legal workers. Students will be trained to:

  • interview witnesses
  • investigate complex fact patterns
  • research the law
  • prepare legal documents
  • assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation

The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which paralegals are most in demand. Successful graduates of both Paralegal I and II will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from Oklahoma City Community College. Students maintaining an "A" average and graduating in the top 25% of their class will be assisted in obtaining voluntary internships in their communities.

COURSE SYNOPSIS:

Paralegal I: Introduction to Paralegal Studies provides the foundation for the study of paralegalism. During this seven-week session, you will gain a detailed understanding of the American legal system, legal terminology, and ethics. You will learn how to prepare pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs, and you will review the rules of evidence and civil procedure.

Paralegal II: Advanced Paralegal Concepts continues the legal education developed in Paralegal I. You will learn advanced skills including legal research, writing, and proper citation format. You will also be taught how to prepare important legal documents relating to real property, corporations, partnerships, wills, trusts, bankruptcy, and domestic relations, and you will study formal and informal advocacy techniques and principles of appellate procedure.

Instructor: The program is coordinated by our educational partner, Scott Hatch, J.D., of The Center for Legal Studies, who has been offering paralegal programs nationally since 1980. His courses are currently offered at over 1,000 universities and colleges across the U.S. and his "Law for Life" series has been featured nationally on PBS. He is the author of several textbooks including Paralegal Procedures and Practices published by West/ITP. Legal professionals including Daire Irwin, J.D. and Peggy Kirk, C.L.A., teach the online course.

Course Fees: Tuition for the course is $494.50 for Paralegal I and $494.50 for Paralegal II or $989 for both. Both Paralegal I and Paralegal II must be successfully completed to receive a Certificate of Completion from Oklahoma City Community College.
