Using a Digital Balance

With your assigned balance, complete the following:

  1. Manufacturer and model number: (this is important to know in case you have to call the company if it breaks or you need to order a replacement part).

      2.  Find the manual for the balance if available, or use the numbers on the balance to
          determine the following characteristics:

  1. Maximum capacity:  (largest mass it can hold)  Be sure and put the units (ie: grams, kilograms)

  1. range of masses it can hold (0 to _________)

  1. sensitivity – what is smallest mass difference the balance can distinguish between?

3.  SOP’s (standard operating procedures) are a scientist’s users guide.  These are
very important when first using a piece of equipment that you are unfamiliar with.
Either by using the manual OR after you’ve used the balance several times, write
an SOP for the use of this type balance.  Things to include in your SOP:

a)      directions for using the balance

b)     directions for calibrating the balance (if applicable)

c)      directions for cleaning the balance

d)     directions for storing/housing the balance

4.  Give your SOP to a fellow student and have them use the balance by reading your
directions in the SOP.  Revise your SOP if necessary.
