Expectations for Teacher Participants
in Biotechnology/Bioinformatics Discovery!
The National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health support
this project and have established specific outcomes. Success depends on teacher
participation. Teachers who do not actively participate in the grant activities
outlined below must be replaced.
All Teacher Participants:
Year One
- Select and implement a biotechnology module in your classroom. The list
of modules can be found at www.occc.edu/bbdiscovery
website under “modules”. Click on “kit descriptions” for a synopsis of each
module.
- Collect project data: student pre and post questionnaires and instructors
evaluation form for each module.
- Submit name(s) for Steering Committee: need one parent, one student, a
principal, a counselor.
- Recruit other teachers to use modules and for a Biotech Expo which will
be held in year two.
- Use the list-serve regularly to share and communicate.
- Help identify students for a full biotech course.
- Submit items for newsletter.
Year Two
- Select and implement another module.
- Attend summer workshop (up to three weeks) to support chosen modules.
Stipends of $70/day will be paid.
- Attend the Survey of Biotechnology course either via the one-credit course
at OKCCC (offered as evening course: 5 nights, 3 hours/night, free tuition)
or via week one of summer workshop.
- Attend four Saturday meetings to connect, and to plan Biotech Expo activities.
- Student participation in the Biotech Expo.
Year Three
Lead Teachers
- All of the above.
- Member of Steering Committee and attends all meetings.
- Teaches the one semester/one year full biotechnology course in second
year.
- Plans the Biotech Expo.
Stipends will be paid for workshop and team meeting time. Lead Teachers
will receive $1000 in the year they first implement the full biotechnology
course and fulfill the above expectations.
