OCCC has purchased four new Dell Precision 690 computers for its Information Technology lab, said Gary Dominguez, Student Computer Center supervisor.

Each Dell Precision 690 has a 4-gigabyte Ram and a 24-inch monitor. The $2300 Precisions have eight processors or dual socket quad cores, as well. “This technology is the fastest you can get right now,” Dominguez said.

Students in computer-aided technology, multimedia, and web development programs are now able to use the new software for their class work.

The new software and programs allow students to create their best work yet and to experience what the latest software is like in today’s workplaces, Dominguez said.

“Students now pay extra effort to detail and actually get their work done,” he said.Computer-aided technology students now have access to AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor programs on the Precisions.

Multimedia students can use 3-D Studio Max and the Adobe professional suite. The suite includes photo, sound, video, and special effects.

Web development software such as Adobe’s Flash and Dreamweaver are offered on the computers as well, Dominguez said.

Student Drew Stone uses the Precision computers for his 3-D rendering work.

“I spot errors more quickly and I am able to correct them in a more timely manner,” he said.

Several courses have already started using the computers, such as web site development, web animation, and digital video editing.

All classes in computer-aided technology’s program use the computers for class-work.
