2008 Alumni Scholarship Recipients

Gedion Yitbarek

Gedion Yitbarek

Former Houston resident and Ethiopian native Gedion Yitbarek is one of three students honored during a recent Oklahoma City Community College Foundation Scholarship Luncheon. Yitbarek, an electrical engineering major, received a $500 cash scholarship.

Yitbarek transferred to OCCC from Houston Community College. He carries a 3.56 grade point average and plans to become a medical researcher. Yitbarek has served as a mathematics tutor and reading and after-school tutor for elementary school students. He has received a number of certificates and awards in computer training, athletics, drama and science.



Martin Ramirez

Martin Ramirez

Bridge Creek High School graduate Martin Ramirez is one of three students honored during a recent Oklahoma City Community College Foundation Scholarship Luncheon. Ramirez, a political science major, received a $500 cash scholarship.

Ramirez carries a 3.7 grade point average and is active in numerous student activities. He currently serves as president of the Hispanic Organization to Promote Education (HOPE), where he was instrumental in implementing a number of volunteer activities, including a clean-up day for low income neighborhood. A member of Chi Alpha honor society, Future Alumni Network and the Global Impact Committee, Ramirez also assists with OCCC recruiting efforts at south Oklahoma City high schools.

Sarah Pontius

Sarah Pontius

Moore High School student Sarah Pontius was honored with the Legacy Scholarship during a recent Oklahoma City Community College Foundation Scholarship Luncheon.

The Legacy Scholarship is a 24-credit-hour tuition waiver awarded to an incoming freshman who is a dependent of a current Alumni Association member. Pontius is the daughter of OCCC alumna Cheryl Pontius.

Pontius is a member of the honor society and received the Most Improved Athlete track team award her junior year. She also participates in the Superintendent's Leadership Class, St. Andrew's Life Teens Youth Group and is SKILLS USA Class Vice President for Moore-Norman Technology Center. She plans to pursue a degree in literature.
