FAQs for Library patrons
Submit an Interlibrary Loan Request
If the Library does not have materials that you want or need, check with a librarian. It may be possible to borrow materials from other libraries. Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a system linking libraries across the nation for sharing resources, based on the principles that no single library can acquire everything and that furthering knowledge is in the public interest. These guidelines define the ILL service for OKC Community College students, faculty and staff, and are the most commonly asked questions about the service.
Who may use it?
The Library provides ILL services to students, college faculty and staff, and to alumni. The appropriate ID card is required. Others may use the Library, but will be referred to the public library for ILL services.
What may be borrowed?
Books, theses, magazines, journals, and newspaper articles may be requested. Videos are rarely loaned, and may be requested only in special cases in consultation with a librarian. Maps and pictures are not available for loan.
Will items already owned by this library be borrowed?
OKC Community College will not request items owned unless that item is at least 3 months past due.
How many magazine and journal articles may be requested?
The Library follows the current copyright limit on fair use of magazine articles -- that during any given year, no more than the legal maximum of five articles from the last five years of a given magazine will be borrowed.
How long does it take to obtain requested material?
An average of nine days. Same day/next day service may be possible only for magazine articles. This service depends on availability of the article among area libraries participating in the faxing agreement, and on the librarian’s discretion.
How is a request submitted?
For each article or book request, complete an ILL Request Form, available at the Library Information Desk or Circulation Desk, or complete the online ILL request form. Up to five requests may be submitted at one time. Requests must be submitted to the librarian on duty, or to the Circulation Desk staff, along with a current OCCC student, staff or alumni ID.
Is there a charge for this service?
At this time the Library covers all charges and costs associated with the ILL process, including any expedited delivery fees.
How are patrons notified once requested material has arrived?
Patrons will be notified by telephone or email when their requested material is available. Because of the difficulty of making phone contact, the patron is also responsible for checking with the Librarian. ILL photocopies for faculty and staff will be sent through campus mail.
How long may the patron use the material?
The length of the lending period is determined by the original lending library. Most libraries loan for three (3) weeks or one month. The patron is responsible for returning the borrowed material to the OKC Community College Library on time.
Where are materials picked up and returned?
Once notified of its availability, the patron should pick up the material at the Circulation Desk. The material should be returned either to the ILL librarian or to the Circulation Desk. If the material is not picked up, the Library may revoke future ILL privileges.
What if materials are not returned?
If ILL materials borrowed from another library are not returned, the patron will be charged for the materials according to the policy of the lending library. A hold will be placed on the student’s registration and transcripts until the material is either returned or paid for.
How does copyright law apply to InterLibrary Loan?
The Federal copyright law 94-553, enacted January 1, 1978, has placed a limit on the number of photocopies of articles that the OCCC library may request from recent periodical issues, i.e. those published in the last five years. Usually this will not affect our ability to request the materials you need, but the library reserves the right to refuse to process requests, which may violate copyright law. On these occasions, library staff will provide patrons with information on how they might acquire the desired materials through other channels.
What restrictions apply to Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan is an agreement between libraries which may be rescinded at any time. The lending library may set limitations or restrictions on loans. If "For Library Use Only" or other restrictions are specified, they must be honored. Interlibrary Loan staff reserves the right to refuse Interlibrary Loan service to any patron who may jeopardize our agreements by violating lending libraries' stipulations.
