Rules for Determining the Number of Significant Figures in a Measurement

  1. All non-zero digits are significant.
  2. Zeros located between 2 non-zero digits are significant.
  3. Leading zeros (those at the start of a number) are never significant.
  4. Trailing zeros (those at the end of a number) are never significant unless they are preceeded by a decimal point somewhere in the number.
