OKC-GO! Program

Statistics indicate that of the ninth graders starting high school in the Oklahoma City Public Schools in 2001, only 49% graduated four years later. OKC-GO! was created to help raise that percentage.

In 1999, Oklahoma City Community College, along with Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys, initiated OKC-GO! This program gives graduates of the Oklahoma City Public Schools a chance at higher education by attending the College tuition-free their first year. They have an incentive to finish high school and to take the next educational step to pursue a career.

Key components of the program are:

  • Tuition waivers for the first two years of college
  • Assistance with scholarships and state and federal financial aid programs
  • Financial assistance from the Oklahoma City Community College Foundation for books and fees
  • Personalized mentoring and counseling

Since its inception, the program has had 1,350 students participating between 1999 and 2004. The enrollment for 2005 is expected to exceed 500 students.

The participants in the program include many students who have a high risk of dropping out of college due to financial challenges, being the first family member to attend college and the need for remedial education to prepare for college level courses. In spite of these risk factors, OKC-GO! students are successful! They are retained from freshman to sophomore year at the rate of 54% compared to 53% for all other high school students who entered college the same semester. In addition, their average GPA is comparable to all other high school students who entered college the same year.

These students are proof that this program is working!

There are several ways you can join the Foundation in making a college degree a reality for many students.

  • Make a commitment of $1000 per year for five years to the program. This will help defray costs of books and fees for the students. This will help about 20 students over the five year period.
  • Make a commitment of $200 per year for five years to the program. You can help five students in that time period with fees and books.

If you choose to support the OKC-GO! program, please indicate that in the Donation Designation box.
