CULTURAL ARTS SERIES 2006 - 2007 PROGRAMMING

Following is the programming for the 2006 - 2007 Cultural Arts Series. We hope that you will have the opportunity to work some of these performances into the context of one or more of your classes. In addition, we will be happy to work with you to determine if we can arrange for a special guest lecture or workshop for your students by one or more of the artists being presented. We may also be able to arrange for special daytime performances for groups of 200 or more. Please call us at 682-7579 so that we can assist you in making the most from having these artists at the College.

Wayanay Inka, Peruvian and Latin American Musical Ensemble

Talented artists that play music from the Peruvian Andes and Latin America using bamboo panpipes and flutes, charangos, guitars and drums.

Tatiana Kuleshova and Marina Rubenshtein - Russian Piano and Flute Duo

This young Russian piano and flute duo makes its US debut on our stage, playing classical to jazz.

Lecture/Demonstration - Wednesday, October 4, 2006, 11:00 a.m., OCCC, Arts and Humanities Building, Room 1C3. The Lecture/Demonstration is Free and Open to the Public.

Turtle Island String Quartet - Violins, Viola and Cello

Grammy-winning string quartet combining the worlds of classical, jazz and world music.
Performance - Tuesday, October 24, 2006, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Lecture/Demonstration; The Art of the Groove, Tuesday, October 24, 2006, 10:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. The lecture/demonstration is free and open to the public.

Ron Radford - Flamenco Guitarist

Returns to our stage with the enchanting sounds of his Flamenco guitar, playing haunting Gypsy melodies to fiery Spanish dance rhythms!
Performance - Tuesday, November 7, 2006, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Workshop, Tuesday, November 7, 2006, 10:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. Ron will conduct a master class for guitar on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the OCCC Theatre. During the class, Ron will critique the playing of several guitar students. He will also play a couple of works from his repertoire. The workshop is free and open to the public.


SPRING 2007

2 Tone - Jazz Harp and Bass Duo

An eclectic musical duo of jazz harp and bass that will set your heart strings humming!
Performance - Tuesday, January 23, 2007, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Tuesday, January 23, 2007, 11:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. 2 Tone, the duo of harpist, Cindy Horstman and bassist, Michael Medina will conduct a workshop on playing jazz within a group. Some of the topics discussed and demonstrated will include: arranging for a group, soloing within a group, amplification techniques, and playing jazz on the harp. A question and answer period will follow a brief performance. Workshop is free and open to all interested parties.

Chestnut Brass Company - Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba

This Grammy-winning quintet has earned international acclaim for brilliant and entertaining performances on modern and historical brass instruments.
Performance - Tuesday, February 20, 2007, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Tuesday, February 20, 2007, 11:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. Chestnut Brass Company's unique one hour presentation, Hot Air: the Story of Brass Instruments, highlights the development of brass instruments from the earliest trumpets to the present day. Utilizing a collection of historical instruments from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods, and antique instruments built in the 19th Century, a parade of instruments will mesmerize your students. Students will be treated to a rare glimpse into the past as they hear Renaissance music performed on instruments that existed during that period. Music from the American Civil War will be performed on instruments that existed and were played at that time. The program culminates with a virtuosic display on modern brass instruments, demonstrating how the instruments have been improved over the centuries. The Rose Ensemble - A Cappella Early Music Vocal Ensemble

Award-winning a cappella vocal ensemble captivating audiences with virtuosic performances of ancient music, blending Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, with folk music and captivating stories.
Performance - Tuesday, March 27, 2007, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Tuesday, March 27, 2007, 11:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. An Exploration of Early Choral Music - A fascinating, in-depth look at the world of early music from the perspective of the musicians of the acclaimed Rose Ensemble. Attend this lecture/demonstration on performance of medieval Bohemian chant and 17th-century Polish and Russian vocal music. Approximately 1 hour. Mark O'Connor and the Appalachia Waltz Trio - Violin/Fiddle, Viola and Cello

Violinist/Composer/Fiddler and Grammy-winner Mark O'Connor and friends will feature the music that reflect his roots, his musical interests and influences … genre-crossing music infused with folk, Celtic and classical shadings.
Performance - Tuesday, April 10, 2007, 7:00 p.m., OCCC Theatre.
Educational Presentation - Tuesday, April 10, 2007, 11:00 a.m., OCCC Theatre. Crossing Bridges - Violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, along with the members of his acclaimed Appalachia Waltz Trio, present an engaging session appropriate for intermediate and advanced players of all ages. Known widely for his singularly American string-playing style that melds influences from classical, jazz, folk and Celtic idioms, Mark, joined by his fellow trio members, invites players to accompany them on a journey Mark calls Crossing Bridges. They will demonstrate the similarities of various styles with the hope participants might broaden their view of the music they play (no matter their "home" style) and emerge with a fresh approach to their playing.
